There are plenty of ways that you can lend a hand to those in need...full-time, part-time or in some way that suits your time and skills. It does require a sacrifice, but nothing like the sacrifices made by the people that we help!

MMET welcomes volunteers for their work based at St Marys in Sydney. Volunteers can assist in areas such as general office duties, preparation of material, hospitality and preparation of stamps for sale. We are also open to the possibility of accepting volunteers for the Mission in East Timor. Selection of volunteers for East Timor would be made on the basis of need, suitability and qualification. Volunteers would be required to complete a period of preparation and to enter into any appropriate agreements. MMET would ensure that the necessary support structures and safeguards are in place.

Volunteering at Mary MacKillop Place assisting the many pilgrims and visitors often has an amazing impact on the many women and men who generously give of themselves. Approximately eighty Mary MacKillop Place Volunteers work each week in areas such as Museum tour guides involving groups of all ages from all over Australia and further afield. Others work in the Museum Coffee Shop; attend to clerical and library records or as hosts throughout the Museum. Hospitality and respect for all guests is an important factor in making everyone welcome at the home and resting place of Australia’s first saint.

MacKillop House is a hostel for country girls – recent school leavers who are studying in Canberra. Volunteer roles at MacKillop House vary according to your talents and availability, for example: involvement in prayer gatherings, activities evenings, skills programs etc.

“Our House” is a place of hospitality and warmth for those in need, especially families who are disadvantaged and disabled, and those struggling with the demands of the health and welfare sectors. It is run by a sister and Josephite Associate Two local service clubs support both ‘Our House’ and ‘Make Today Count’ where Annette works as a Community Outreach Person supporting people with life-threatening illnesses. They welcome the assistance of volunteers.

NILS is a scheme established by the Sisters of St Joseph, Lochinvar, to provide low-income earners with a ‘no interest loans’ so that basic household goods can be purchased. The scheme is entirely run by volunteers who interview the people as well as attend to the finances.

Established in 1991, originally for homeless men with drug problems, House of Hospitality, is facilitated by a sister with the assistance of a lay faith community. It now serves both men and women and children, providing them with temporary accommodation. Volunteers assist in various ways.

The Ecumenical Care Service, founded and co-ordinated by Sr Marjorie McLachlan, runs a soup kitchen in Port Macquarie every Monday, serving up to 180 three-course meals. Each Saturday the group runs an Op-Shop in order to raise funds for the soup kitchen. They also care for some 30-40 people with mental illness, in conjunction with the Port Macquarie Base Hospital, helping them to shop, taking them on outings, being a friend they can turn to. The Ecumenical Care Service operates entirely on volunteers.

A Josephite sister, accompanies our Aboriginal brothers and sisters, particularly those who experience difficult times in their lives. While there are agencies to support people of specific age with various needs, volunteers are always welcome, especially young people who would like to share their faith and musical talents with the children.

The Josephite’s Aged Care Team works in the Bathurst area, visiting senior members of the community in their homes and/or aged care facilities, taking a lonely person for a cup of coffee, listening, taking an interest, etc. Volunteers most welcome to share in this ministry of befriending a senior member of the community. Initial orientation and on-going support is provided for volunteers.
