Sisters of St Joseph of the Sacred Heart:

Central Josephites

SOSJ LogoThe central Sisters of St Joseph of the Sacred Heart attempt to make their own the heartfelt cause of the poor. Their mission focus is to walk with those in most need of God's justice and hospitality.

There are almost a thousand Sisters of St Joseph living and working throughout Australia, New Zealand, Peru, Ireland, Scotland, East Timor and Brazil. These sisters still have a central leadership which is located in North Sydney and are organised in the following provinces and regions: South Australia, Queensland, New South Wales, New Zealand, Western Australia, Victoria, Peru, Ireland and Scotland.

We are summoned, as Mary and Julian were, to set out on new pathways. We are called afresh to explore mission and identity as consecrated women religious. (Acts of Chapter SOSJ 2007)

Ministry photos The Sisters response to those in most need of God's justice and hospitality is seen in ministry in places such as schools, detention centres, Aboriginal communities, community development programs, aged care facilities, pastoral care and spirituality development work in many arenas especially the rural.

In most of these ministries the Sisters are working more and more with others who share their vision and values and the Josephite charism. These partnerships are often incorporated to ensure the ongoing viabilility of the ministries. The Sisters have been challenged recently by women seeking to join them from a variety of ethnic groups and life experiences and are at different stages of their life journeys. This has called for a new understanding of forms of living Josephite consecrated life and leading to new and deeper appreciation of Josephite identity.
