Storyline of Josephites

1842 Mary MacKillop born in Melbourne.
1854 Julian E Tenison Woods arrived in Australia.
1861 Rev J E Tenison Woods meets Mary MacKillop.
1866 First Josephite school opened in Penola SA.
1867 Fr Woods drafts first rule for Sisters; 1st convent and school in Adelaide.
1869 First foundation in Brisbane.
1871 Mary excommunicated. By this time 40 schools and convents and four charitable institutions in SA.
1872 Excommunication lifted Commission of enquiry established. Perthville - Foundation.
1873 - 74 Mary MacKillop takes rule to Rome. On return revised rule is accepted.
1878 Rule for Diocesan sisters approved by Bishop Quinn.
1879 Josephites required to leave Brisbane.
1880 10 communities established in NSW. Whanganui (NZ) - Foundation from Perthville.
1882 Goulburn -Foundation from Perthville.
1883 Lochinvar Foundation from Perthville. RSJ   community established at Temuka, NZ. Commission into SA communities established Mary MacKillop required to  leave SA for Sydney.
1887 Westbury, Tasmania Foundation from Perthville. Wilcannia Diocese established 18 Perthville sisters formed diocesan group. Central Josephites’ foundation in WA.
1888 Rome approves central government for RSJ Decree of Propaganda approving erection of diocesan institutes of SSJ.
1889 Father Woods dies.
1890 Central Josephite community established at Numurkah, Vic.
1891 Foundation made from Perthville at Bungaree, Ballarat diocese.
1900 RSJ sisters return to Queensland. Creswick, Ballarat diocese Foundation from Tasmania.
1902 Amalgamation of Wilcannia Josephites with Central Josephites.
1909 Mary MacKillop dies.
1915 Creswick sisters transferred to Lochinvar.
1965 Decision made by leaders of five diocesan Josephite congregations to form a federation. Goulburn Josephites open mission in Vanimo PNG.
1967 Approval of Federation statutes. Perthville Sisters open mission convent at Suain PNG.
1968 Formal establishment of Federation.
1973 Mary MacKillop named ‘Servant of God’.
1981 Central Josephite foundation in Peru.
1986 Representatives from Central congregation and Federation prepare for Woods centenary.
1989 Centenary of Woods’ death celebrated.  Colloquium held with congregational leadership teams and formators from all groups. Four Federation leaders attended Central General Chapter as observers. Joint conferences held. First Central Josephite calendar.
1991 Central leadership representatives at Federation general meeting ( regular practice hereafter).  Shared novitiate for Central and Perthville novices. Irene McCormack, central Josephite, murdered by terrorists in her mission in Peru.
1992 Mary MacKillop declared Venerable.
1993 First Josephite calendar with shared contributions from Central and Federation Josephites.
1994 Shared Josephite conference for ‘under 40s’. Central Josephites respond to Bishop  of East Timor’s request and provide personnel and resources for literacy materials.
1995 Beatification of Mary MacKillop; shared celebrations. Central Chapter approves ‘Ireland Reconnecting’ Sisters returning to Ireland for ministry and retirement.
1996 Josephite sisters withdrew from Vanimo PNG Josephite gathering at Mount St for celebration of Mary MacKillop’s Feast Day (hereafter shared celebrations for this and St Joseph’s day in NSW)
1998 Perthville Josephites withdrew from PNG.
1999 Establishment of Josephite Justice Network.
2005 Ireland established as a formal region of Central congregation.
2006 Josephite Journeying Group (JJG) set up at joint sessions of Federation Meeting with Central leaders, to promote closer relationships.

Central Josephite attends meeting on USA of Josephite congregations with focus on Justice.
2007 All members of central CLT and Provincials plus one councillor attend joint sessions with Federation leadership teams. Josephite Visioning Team (JVT) set up to consider ways forward to share vision and ministry. Two Federation Josephites represent all groups at first combined Josephite meeting for global justice in Le Puy.
2008 Continued representation at Josephite global Justice gathering in Lyon. Shared project to create this 'Josephite' website and produce new 'Be A Josephite' resources for WYD08.
